Q&A

Q. What is it about accounting and consulting that first drew your interest?
I was drawn to the opportunity to work on meaningful strategic projects with senior executives in a wide range of industries. I’m a strategy guy so I like to know what we are doing, what we are trying to accomplish and how we make that happen. I love solving a company-level strategic problem. It gives me personal satisfaction to see my clients succeed as a result of work we have done that helped get them there.
Q. What’s your proudest moment?
Unquestionably seeing my kids graduate from college. My daughter just finished her master’s degree, and it was even more fantastic than when she got her undergraduate degree because it represented so much hard work, dedication and desire to achieve. My son completed the trifecta, becoming a graduate of the business school at Indiana University, third-generation Hoosier. Those were absolutely big-time moments for me.
Q. Who is (or was) the most influential person in your life
In who profoundly shaped my life, it would be my stepfather. He was a member of the Greatest Generation, fought in WWII as a medic. He saw horrific things. Came back at 22 and finished up college, went to medical school, ultimately delivered me and eventually married my mother. He was simply the greatest man I’ve known. Taught me what it meant to be a man, husband, father and professional.
Q. If you could pass on a nugget of wisdom to aspiring accountants or consultants, what would that be?
The same advice I always give: Learn to ask a good first question, and a better second that shows you listened to what they told you after the first question. Consulting is about asking questions, not just answering them.
Q. Describe your work style.
Empowering, trusting, approachable and congenial.
