Meet John

John Brychel is a Tax Partner with Armanino, with more than 20 years of industry experience. Prior to joining the firm’s tax practice, John spent two years as a Systems Consultant with Armanino’s Information Technology (IT) Group.

Clients appreciate John’s ability to understand their business and identify strategies to take advantage of tax opportunities and mitigate various tax risks. He also teaches seminars and online webinars for clients and external partners on topics such as the Fiscal Cliff and Budget Crisis.

John has extensive expertise in servicing clients with technology, corporate, real estate and high-net-worth individual tax issues. John is an excellent resource for trust and estate tax planning, helping families plan for their future and accomplish their goals. Many of his clients are also part of the manufacturing, distribution and wholesale (MDW), and food and beverage industries.

John is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and of CalCPA. He holds the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation, and he earned a Bachelor of Science with a concentration in Finance from The University of Arizona.

Q&A

Q. What fundamental business lessons have you learned from your experience as an accountant?
Being proactive and relating with your clients is key to business success. Have open communication year-round, not only during tax season or while doing their tax return.
Q. What is the toughest decision you have ever made?
At one point I left AM to go into private industry. Leaving was the toughest decision but I eventually came back—it was a very short interval. It really brought home the adage, you never know what you got until it’s gone.
Q. What’s your proudest moment?
Professionally—when it was announced I made partner. Non-professionally—birth of my daughters.
Q. Who is (or was) the most influential person in your life
My family in general, and my mom in particular. As a single mom, she made sacrifices for our family and helped me get where I am today. My wife is a huge supporter of mine and I would not be where I am today without her.
Q. Who is (or was) the most influential person in your career
Joe Moore, former managing partner, and Brad Cless, head of tax department. I’ve learned a lot from them over the years and they have been very instrumental in shaping me professionally. They are great mentors.
Q. If you could go back in time and change some aspect of your life, what would it be?
My father passed away when I was very young, so if I could go back in time I would like to spend some time with him and just talk. Talk about what life is all about, where we were and where we are now and everything that has happened in between.
Q. If you could pass on a nugget of wisdom to aspiring accountants or consultants, what would that be?
You have the chance to be in control of your own destiny; take advantage of that.
